NOTICE TO RESIDENTS: BE ALERT FOR DOOR-TO-DOOR SCAMS

The City would like to remind residents to be cautious when approached by individuals going door-to-door offering painting, roofing, landscaping, home repairs, or other services.

While many legitimate businesses operate door-to-door, scammers and dishonest contractors may use this approach to pressure residents into paying for unnecessary work, paying large amounts up front, or allowing unauthorized individuals onto their property.

Residents are encouraged to:

Do not feel pressured to make an immediate decision or sign a contract.
Ask for the individual’s name, business name, and contact information.
Request a written estimate before agreeing to any work.
Be cautious of anyone demanding cash or a large payment up front.
Verify that the business is legitimate and, when appropriate, properly licensed and insured.
Verify that the business has a current business license with the City by calling. 660-834-3551
Do not allow anyone into your home unless you are comfortable with who they are and the reason for their visit.
Talk with a family member, friend, or neighbor before agreeing to unfamiliar work.
If something does not seem right, trust your instincts and do not agree to the work.

If you believe you have encountered a scammer or have concerns about suspicious activity, contact the Pilot Grove Police Department or Cooper County Sheriff's Department. If you believe you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Please look out for yourself and your neighbors. A few extra minutes of caution can help prevent someone from becoming a victim of fraud.
